View Full Version : Squadron affiliated online skins?

How much of a rewrite would it take to make online skins happen that are squadron specific? For example, the 352nd are the only ones that would be flying bluenose 51's, the 31st the only one with candy stripes, JG2 & JG51 having their historically acurate squadron skins, etc.

It doesn't seem like it would be that major of a rewrite. Player names are already tracked for both friend & foe. We already have the ability to highlight an entire squadron with the .HLS command. And we're currently able to change skins on a per plane basis already.

How much of a rewrite would it take to at least have the .HLS command select a different skin for your group, and better yet allow each group to reserve their historically accurate skin where they would be the only ones displaying them in-game?

Seems like the majority of code is already there and I don't see it requiring any additional data being transmitted. I think it would be an easy way to do a lot to energize group enthusiasm and breath some new life into the game.

...and what about the parrots, greenwings, turtles and ferrets? ;)

Good question. One I had considered but not sure I have a good answer.

Allow you guys to pick an unofficial squad a/c and come up with your own fantasy skin for that a/c? If so I think a requirement would be that it would be historically accurate in appearance.

Allow you to adopt an unused historical squadron and use theirs?

Say tough luck and you just get to use the default skin?

What do you suggest?

Regardless, if done right, the historical squadrons should be the only ones sporting their respective historically accurate skins online.

I don't have an answer, just a few thoughts. Maybe a solution would be setting squad skins as an arena setting, it could be a nice addition for events like the S3 or the emc. So each squad can fly temporary with its own skin, depending which unit it presents.

I'm not sure if picking up an ac-type just for having a own skin makes really sense, even if a lot of squads aren't dedicated to the axis or allied side. Individual ac-skins could be a solution, that would also include the squad skins if the squad decided just to pick one ac-type.

At all I'm totally against fantasy skins, I wouldn't even want to see our own logo on a ww2 plane, just because its pure fiction.

I was hoping you would see it that way.

As for individual skins, we need to take baby steps. Let's get the squad level skins in before we go after individual skins. Plus it looks like most of the code is already there for squad level skins.

what if squad C.O designed skin for squadron and then on the squad option in tower could give them to members for certain planes like giving permissions or emailing a folder with the skin in to the person who wants it. (im not sure that makes sense but to an eleven year old child it does:cool:)
