There is a clear wartime reference photo that shows the Balkenkreuz like shown below. This is the way I'm submitting it. I have no doubt the crosses were Maltese crosses before being revised.

Here's the b/w photo. I have a version as you know with the Maltese crosses and like it better. If you look closely at the b/w, you can see where the Maltese cross was overpainted with white before the Latin crosses were put on.
