FURBALL : NEWS

PDC Skin Pack Update III - The next two out of the gate, again come from Raptor and Kossu. Nice matchups for the skies over Europe.
Tonight we bring you a Bf 109 G6/R6 from Kossu that just looks evil, but I mean that in a good way. :-) We also have Raptor's "Sleepy Time Gal" a B-17 to drool over. Almost beats your pappa's Playboy. The ZIP files are up on the PDC download page here.
PDC Skin Pack Update II - The PDC promised only two a day, but is reeleasing a special 3 plane set today for the Battle of Britain S3 Scenario.
With the upcoming Battle of Britain S3 series the Warbirds Player Development Corps thought it fitting to get some new Emils out there. Kossu's work is, as usual, excellent and brings the very old model a new life. More PDC skins will be released tomorow from the late war skin pack. The ZIP files are up on the PDC download page here.

Quick Pics - Three new images of the soon to be released Ki-61 including the cockpit artwork of new iEN artist John Dupree. I left the last one, his cockpit, at full size so ya'll could take a real good look.

Quick Pics - Three more night and "dusk" shots. Note the coloring of the cockpit interior in the middle Ki-43 shot.
PDC Skin Pack Update - The PDC will be releasing two new skins every day, for about a week. Starting right here and now.
The PDC has been on a LONG hiatus trying to find a new and better way of providing skins to you the player. We're right back at square one with our quest for a faster loading customized skin. But while the search was on, the artists were all still very busy. The next week will bring to you the Late War Skin Pack, seperated into two planes a day. This will give you time to truly savor the incredible artwork that went into each model (it will also save iEN a good chunk of change on bandwidth, but that's secondary, right? :-) ). The ZIP files are up on the PDC download page here.

Quick Pics - Two screenshots from recent Night Ops development for Warbirds III. The first one is a full 800X600 image suitable as a Windows Wallpaper.
Open Beta Update - iEN has released it's latest Warbirds III build for August 28th, 2002
This update brings the shadows up to an optimized, hopefully playable level as well as introducing the work of FIEND-, iEN's newest artist, to the player base. His work on the cockpit of the new P-39 is outstanding. Other "fixes" include road patches that fix display problems as well as a physics "tweek". The main goal of this update is to bring players "in-line" with what will be available on the CD release expected to hit store shelves in the coming weeks. Both PC and Mac updates are available here.
Forced Warbirds III Update - iEN has released it's latest Warbirds III build for August 7th, 2002
This update includes too many things to list here. Some of the highlights are; Spitfire IVX, Mosquito IV and VI, Roads in the Europe (terr001) terrain, ACMCAM (which allows players to record and share combat experiences and play them back in offline mode), a new spawn point selection UI in the "Fields" tab, a mission editor that allows players to create their own offline games, and online drone wingmen for bombers. Both PC and Mac updates are available here.

Quick Pic - Three in one screenshot. Coming to Warbirds III: roads, shadows, new effects.
New DoA terrain - VGO has released a new beta terrain for Dawn of Aces 2.X
While work continues on Dawn of Aces III, VGO www.vgogamer.com continues to advance the online world of DoA 2.X with terrain work and events. The latest version is still in need of beta testing, so take her for a spin and report any problem to the Beta Terrain Forum. You can download the full ZIP here. However Mac users will only need the ".trn" file in their DoA directory.

Quick Pics - Three screen shot of the first aircraft for Dawn of Aces III, the F2b British Fighter/Bomber.
Optional Open Beta - iEN has released it's new open beta for 07-02-02
The latest update fixes a big ugly bug in the first open beta. We didn't mention the first release here because of that bug. What was the bug? Invisable enemies... ick, ya... bad. But, that's fixed now, and to make amends iEN has released it's first rough version of what it's calling guncam. More than a guncam, it's a playable record of your online fights in a form that can hold up to 15 minutes of 32 plane action in a 200KB file. Both PC and Mac updates are available here.
Mission Planner Update - Paul ' =rix== ' Rix has released a new verion of his Warbirds Mission Planner.
New features include IAS/TAS conversion, clearer waypoint numbering in output images, and a more user friendly interface. Paul has also been so gracious as to allow Furball to mirror the file in its interity.
Download and read about Rix's project here.
Effects Teaser - iEN will release a small movie showing some of the effects the team is working on Monday, until then, a little peak.
The Warbirds team is hard at work on new content for the expected Fall release of the boxed version of Warbirds III entitled, Warbirds III: Fighter Pilot Academy. With a new graphics programmer who replaces long since gone VOR, and a new graphic artist brought on just to handle effects work, the visual appeal of the game stands to get quite a boost. HOTSEAT, lead designer, has promised a movie of some of the effects in development sometime next week, probably Monday. Until then, for those that just can't wait, here's a look at the new flame effect as a work in progress.
Forced Update - iEN has released it's new forced update for 6-13-02
The new Macchi 205, a slew of cockpit updates and an exposed and updated effects system are the hallmarks of the latest build of Warbirds. This update will bring you up to speed from either 3/20/02 version or any of the OPEN beta versions between now and then. Highlights: Tank fire, bomb shockwave effect, and cartidge discharge. Both PC and Mac updates are available here.
Open Beta Part Dieux - iEN has released an update to Warbirds III - 06-05-02
The new Macchi 205 (Editor's Note: Whoops, 205 will be next weeks forced update, not this weeks, my bad.) and a destroyer (with wakes built right in) highlight the latest update to Warbirds. Not a forced download (expected next week) this update installs ONLY over a clean 3/20/02 + 05/08update build. This does NOT update straight from the latest full forced download. Both PC and Mac updates are available here.
Mission Planner Released - Paul ' =rix== ' Rix has released a new verion of his Warbirds Mission Planner.
New features include new maps by Oscoog, the ability to export the map and route as a JPG file, reformatted output text file, numbered waypoints on the route plot and new symbols for IP and target waypoints. A number of bugs have been identified and fixed.
Flight plan data against the waypoint numbers shows data to get TO that waypoint rather than FROM the waypoint as it was in the previous versions. This is to mirror how RL planning software presents it's information.
Download and read about Rix's project here.
Open Beta Rele... er... Escapes - iEN has released an update to Warbirds III - 05-08-02
New "stuff" includes, X2 terrains, tonnage on target and a complete UI overhaul. Available for download via Furball's handy dandy little drop down menu in the downloads page. Both PC and Mac updates are available here.
Sneak Peek - Follow the yellow brick road.
From deep within the bowels of iEN headquarters... EWWWW!!!... comes a nifty little screenshot of an honest to goodness road. Not expected in the upcoming release (rumored to be out this week sometime) but coming soon to a Warbirds arena near you eventually. It's just the picture, no story. Sucks, I can't interview myself for this thing. :-)
PDC Tunisia Skin Pack - Ten new skins in both high and low resolution.
The PDC has released Tunisia: the Skin Pack. Ten a/c done in high res 1024x1024 and low res 512x512 representing a myriad of historical players in the most decisive battles to occur in Afrika during WW2. Visit the Furball PDC downloads page for this latest downloads.
DoA Beta Terrain Update - Another update to the Beta terrain.
VGO has produced another version of the beta Dawn of Aces terrain. Long dorment, this terrain is undergoing it's second test in as many weeks. Perhaps DoA is not dead? Time will tell, but the boys at VGO certainly seem determined. Visit the Furball mirror and scroll to the bottom of the page for this latest terrain update.
PDC Malta Skin Pack - Ten new skins in one fat download. Malta Event Skins all 'round.
The PDC has been burning the midnight oil to give you Malta: the Skin Pack. Ten a/c done in high res 1024x1024 representing the best collaberative work effort yet from the players and enthusiasts who make up the Player Development Corps. Visit the Furball PDC downloads page for this latest offering..
DoA Terrain Update - VGO comes though with terrain update.
After a long hiatus, development has begun on Dawn of Aces. VGO headed up by Dave =mjrp= Gruger has begun work on both DoA2.75 as well as DoAIII in conjunction with iEN and the newly emerging DoA PDC. Available for download now is the latest iteration of a terrain begun over a year ago. Visit the Furball mirror and scroll to the bottom of the page for this latest terrain update.
352nd FG Pony Online Skin - Custom online skin release from the PDC.
Target has gotten good at driving artists batty. But after twisting BB Gun's arm enough and throwing him and Dadman in a room together for a week, the beautiful Miss Helen emeged. A sweet skin and a nice ride to boot. This marks the third piece done as a collaborative effort by folks both within and without the PDC. Just goes to show you, you don't have to be a "full time" skinner to help the cause. Miss Helen is available here.
Forced Update - iEN has released the first complete update since 12/12/01. This download is a "forced version".
New items are many but the highlights for those not partaking in all of the beta updates along the way are, the Macchi 202, the SBD, the Kaga Carrier, Seafire, 109K, and the editors own personal favorite, the Ki-43. For a complete list of changes, view the new Readme file. Both PC and Mac updates are available here.
Dadman's Allied Warbirds - Custom online skin release from the PDC.
After driving Dadman crazy with all my nitpicking, I have finally decided to give the poor man a break and release his first two skins for the PDC online skin project. The P51D "Flying Dutchman" is as good a skin as you will probably ever see on a Pony, and the B17G "Good Deal" really brings home the amazing amount of detail work that Dadman is capable of. Both skins are available here.
Ballistic 1:1 Open Beta Mass Test - New Open Beta Download
In and attempt to assess the possibilities of full 1 to 1 ballistics modeling iEN has released an Open Beta download of Warbirds III that can be played only in the Ballistics Testing arena. "We have created an accurate and correct version, but want to test it under load to check out how it affects the server and everyone's connections before rolling it into the next WarBirds III build. The Open Beta Mass Test will take place on Monday February 18th. HotSeat has set up an arena, which is PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK and the message of the day will state what needs testing." . Download the beta straight from the front page. wbw1to1021502.exe 2.5MB for PC or wbm1to1upd021502.sit 1.3MB for Mac
New Spitfire! - Custom online skins, first release.
From the little elves of the PDC comes the first of many customized online skins for Warbirds III. The first skin is for the Spit Mark I by -baal- and is based on a Spit from the No.19 Sqn Spitfire during the Battle of Britain. It served with the squadron from 11 August 1940 to 10 September 1940 when it was transferred to No.609 Sqn. Download the new Spitfire here.
New Spitfire Cockpit - First release from the PDC
The first installment of what will "hopefully" be a TON of new art from the PDC (Player Development Corps) has been released and is available via furball. Baal's Spitfire, Mark I Cockpit is highly detailed and seems a lot less "cluttered" than the original art. Get the details.

Quick Pic - Single screen shot of the view from a CV gunner's position in development for Warbirds III. "Online in CV gunner position, in 25 foot waves (hence the angle of the water line)" Thanks to Dan "HOTSEAT" Neault for the preview. Click thumbnail for full size view.
SPITBAAL's - A completely new section of Warbirds offline player skins. BY A SINGLE PLAYER!
After receiving more than 25 planes from Baal, Furball decided to make up a new category just for his Spitfire beauties. Twenty-three of those skins make up a collection of Spit I, V, and IX's that would make the most jaded historical snoopster gasp with joy. Come on Spitdweebs, you have hit the mother-load!
Rumor proves true - A long standing rumor that Warbirds III would be ported to XBOX revealed to be fact.
After a mention of XBox support from CEO Wild Bill Stealey in a recent MacWorld story, HOTSEAT confirmed the report and added these comments in an AGW thread.. "We designed WBIII graphics for X Box, VOR was very right in supporting it. The X-Box version of WBIII would not be like anything you know now. X-Box requires a different kind of game than current WB. I doubt you guys would be sharing any real {arena settings} with an X-Box version. I think the X-Box version would be alot of fun, and it would be nice to not be worried about the "sim" aspect of the game all the time. I'm more interested in what other titles we could bring to X-Box, not so much WB." Note: VOR is the creator of the Winter Wolf Graphics Engine that runs Warbirds III.
Real Effects Ver 1.0 - Artist, Justin Kellis takes effects to the next level with a package of custom effects textures.
The creator of a popular set of historically based Warbirds III gun sites has created a set of customized effects textures for Warbirds III. The effects defaults were made available for alteration in the last release of Warbirds. For those who are still waiting for a tutorial on this stuff, it's coming, but in the meantime you can download Justin's KickButt textures from his site, and if your into anime' check out popgirl under archives at popgirl.net.
Warbirds in a Box - iEN to put series of sims back onto retail shelves.
In an announcement released today, iEN proclaimed plans to distribute Warbirds III in boxed form to retail outlets world wide. The release also went on to say that there would be a series of sims based on the Warbirds III game engine. Later, game producer Jay "DIVINE" Littman called for player input into the names of four types of sims. These included a World War II air war sim, a World War I air war sim, a Korean air war sim, a World War II ground war sim, and a combined air, land and sea World War II sim. Read Yahoo-Finance for the initial release, and then AGW's post regarding the names of the sim series.
Player Development Corps - Call for Applicants.
After a year and a half of wait since it was first mentioned, the Player Development Corps now exists and will be accepting applications from players. The goal of the group is to enhance production of art and design for the Warbirds III game engine while keeping a sharp eye on detail and historical accuracy. Get the details.
Money for Movies - New CEO offers up cash for good promo video
Kick the wife out, lock the kids in the closet and go into a dark room with a video camera! Because, folks, this time, it's for MONEY! New CEO Wild Bill Stealey is loosening up the purse strings for the best Warbirds III movie he can get his mits on. Get the details.
KAGA - Kaga! Kaga! Kaga! KAGA! KAGA! KAGA! KAGA! UPDATE *
This just in from Jay "DIVINE" Littman, the next iteration of Warbirds III is coming soon and it will contain, TADA, carriers! Click for screenshots *UPDATE: I've set up a zip file of all 18 of the original screenshots iEN sent. They are different from the originals only in that they are JPEG instead of TGA for better compression. Download Zip here.
Warbirds III Map Update - Bader sent us an updated Warbirds III map along with good tidings for the New Year.
"A slight error was noted by one of you eagle-eyed pilots, thanks for that, it's good to know the maps are being used. For those I've yet to meet in the virtual skies, Happy New Year, I hope it will not be as troubled as last. If you have further comments, please contact me. One other reason to send this amendment is because Glars has asked all reference to him be removed which apart from an acknowledgement at the beginning, has been done. Since he has obviously made his mind up about this, I would ask all people to respect his wishes and not contact him (about this map)." Right click on this link and hit "Save target as..." to download the new map to your hard drive. EWB3.1.3.pdf (228 KB)
Paint it! - Furball's Custom Skin section is back, and perhaps a bit better organized.
It's been a major reshuffle of information, and files, but it's finally back up. For instructions on how to setup your skins for viewing in Warbirds III, click here. To learn how to create your own skins, click here. For a list of downloads that can make creating a skin less difficult, click here. For Player Contributed WBIII Aircraft Art click here.
Best Online Simulation: WarBirds III - WBIII gets kudos from Simulation News
"WarBirds III in this stage is surprisingly bug-free. In my testing, I encountered a few minor problems, mainly with graphics, but those are easily fixed. Compared to large sims like Jane's F-15 or Falcon 4, this game comes to the party largely correct and stable. One reason for this is that developers listen to the criticism and discussion on their web page...Warbirds III, as it stands right now, is a worthy competitor to any of the boxed sims (Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 1 and 2, etc.)." -Bob Nielsen, Contributing Editor. From Warbirds III Review. Read more.
Gun Camera for Warbirds III *- Update - 12-31-01 A look at the new addon and the player behind it.
"Now with the advent of Warbirds III a new program that worked with the constraints of the "next generation" game was needed. Enter Troy "phenix" Errthum and his Java Guncam for WarbirdsIII. Player development of tools outside of the operating environment of the game itself is nothing new. But the quality of the images available to a history buff trying to recapture a moment through virtual means, is. *Update: "Added keyboard control, added brighten image option, redid GUI appearance, created jar file to make setup and running easier." Read more. See phenix's site for the Mac beta released.
Custom Texture - Furball's first little effect.
With the release of the 12-12 version of Warbirds III comes the ability to alter textures. I said I'd do it, and I done it. The first effect from my list to go public. The hit sprite. To use it, right click over the link and hit "Save target as". Then put the file in your Warbirds III Textures folder. Remember, if you want to keep the old one around you'll need to copy it separately first! Anyway, here's the new effect for download. A texture tutorial will follow (As soon as I have it straight in my own head.)

Malta will be used for an historical scenario when Lapwin (the CM Chair) is happy with the available planeset (Can you say Macchi? I knew you could.) This from Hotseat, "As you can see, Malta is not so small, when 1 to 1 scale is used. Landmass is HIGHLY detailed, and elevation should be correct to 10m" See the screen shots.

Kent ICEMAN East has released the second iteration of a new terrain developed with the help of members of the community. (Specifically =mjrp= and vlas++.) This version has the folowing changes; 1) Some fields moved around to present a better "over all coverage" of the terrain. 2) Elevation issues fixed at 2 fields 3) All fields now have a loon 4) Arty moved to center of map (starting work on trench line) 5) Zep hangar fixed. I think it should now blow up. 6) Overall elevation smoothed out some (to get rid of most of the shark tooth appearance) 7) 8 fields now have a secondary loon or observation post away from the fields (this is where the issues lie). Download the terrain at Furball's mirror.

Tuning your stick for WarBirds 2 and 3 - How to get the most out of your equipment.

"For most sim pilots, the world of controllers hasn't changed much since the days of Chuck Yeager's Air Combat and Falcon 3.0 ... or even earlier. Sure, we have more buttons and hats, but the important stuff is the same. Almost every controller relies on linear potentiometers to read your stick input. That's not bad; a good potentiometer offers very high precision. But several things get in the way." Read more.

PANZER! - New German Armor

Thanks to Dan "HOTSEAT" Neault for sending along a few preview pics of the next tank in Warbirds III, put together by Mike Tyson. See the screen shots.

DoA Free Arena - becomes a regular event!

Fly the WWIA for nothing! This from Kent ICEMAN East, iEN Community Events Manager - "Every Saturday morning at 9:00 am ET I will set the World War I arena so that FREE accounts can log into it. When it allows FREE accounts in the title will read "FREE-World War I". It will be very similar to the Warbirds ACA in that only 2 planes will be available to each side. No field capture is enabled, no "arty" and no bombers. Just pure dogfighting fun. It will stay open for 24 hours, and be closed to the free accounts at 9:00 am ET Sunday morning. This rotation will continue for as long as the arena remains popular."

Down and Dirty Sherman Tank Gallery - Three new pics, beware, directly linked to FULL size originals.

Dawn of Aces III - Vote for your pick to be the first plane in the new generation of DoA.

Work is just begining on the plane set for DoA III. Get involved and help decide what gets done first.

"Two questions, answers short and sweet.
A) What a/c would you most like to see as the first Dawn of Aces III model? (From current plane list please, lets not get off into varients et al until we've got at least what we already have in 2.XX finished.)

B) Do you have 3-View drawings and/or plan designs for this a/c?"

Answer these querries here.

Dirty Harry's Wet Dream - Latest addition to the ground war packs some serious heat.

Thanks to Jay "DIVINE" Littman for sending us a sneak preview of the next BIG thing in Warbirds III. Dan "HOTSEAT" Neault has put together a rolling gun platform that puts Clint Eastwood to shame. All other versions will not allow you to see the arena listing. All Arenas should be converted by 5:30-6:00 ET." Get the download.

Big Gun & Hitler's Home - Again, not news, just a couple of screen shots.

Another in a series of cryptic messages from behind the walls of iEN HQ. "That's a big gun, wonder what he is going to do with it?" I don't know, but the action on the ground in Warbirds III is looking better all the time. - Target

Click on the thumbnails to view the screenshots.

New Vehicle in Warbirds III - No news, just a sneak peak at the next field piece.

Why is that German truck backing up to the warehouse? Perhaps it's picking up supplies that are needed by a factory that produces the new uber 190, without which nobody in the Northern half of the map will be able to fly the new plane. Maybe, maybe not, but Hotseat admits that I'm close. - Target

ICEMAN Interview - A discussion of Warbirds 2.77, 3.0 and MCNC Dogfighter.com has published an interview with Kent "ICEMAN" East by our editor, Target. "We felt that the number of things had just gotten too big to ignore, and some of the more important fixes we put into WBIII ended up coming out as 2.77 We also needed to put out 2.77 as a way to test the new connection system (no more iLZ) before the WBIII Open Beta. Once we are sure the new connection system works with the billing and user administration system we can feel better about starting the Beta." Read more.

Warbirds 2.77 Final Release - Furball/Dogfighter mirror is active. Today (Feb. 14, 2001) marks the end of the ILZ for Warbirds players.
